I am a big fan of the air fryer. There are so many things that you can cook in them. Perfect for when you don’t want to turn on your oven or if you want to make small servings for just one or two people. One of my favorite recipes to make are these air fryer apple chips. I will admit I have a bit of a sweet tooth so it is nice to make some healthy snacks once in a while, haha.

These air fryer apple chips are healthy and easy to make and a great way to use up leftover apples. If you love using your air fryer and you love apples, give this snack recipe a try.

Let’s get air frying!

Ingredients/Equipment

Gala apple on a cutting board next to a pyrex bowl.

In order to make apple chips in the air fryer you need just a few ingredients and tools:

  • Apples – You can’t make apple chips without apples. I like to use Gala apples but you can use whatever apple that you want. Experiment with different apples and see what you like best.
  • Cinnamon – This is optional, but I always like to add it. You could add nutmeg too if you like. Nutmeg and cinnamon go great with apples.
  • Cooking oil – You may or may not want to use a bit of cooking spray. I don’t normally use it, but you certainly can, especially if you want a bit of flavor.

How to make apple chips in an air fryer

Hand slicing an apple using a mandolin.

Begin by prepping your apple or apples. First, rinse and dry the apple/s.

Time to slice those apples up. You can core the apple first if you wish. I don’t usually core the apple. The core is edible and you don’t really notice it once the apple chips are made. Just make sure to remove the seeds.

I will either cut the apple in half then dig out the seeds then slice it using the mandolin. Or just take the whole apple and run it across my mandolin. Then take out any seeds.

Place the apple slices in a bowl. The slices will wind up being 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch thick.

NOTE: Please make sure to use the guard with that mandolin, it is sharp and I don’t want you accidentally running your fingertips across it.

You can also just use a knife to slice the apple into thin chip shapes. It is totally up to you how you make your thin apple slices.

At this point, if you like, you can spray the apple slices with a bit of cooking spray. It helps them crisp up and gives a bit of flavor.

Then sprinkle on some cinnamon and or nutmeg if desired. I usually always use cinnamon.

Air Fryer Time

Arrange the apple slices loosely and flat in the air fryer basket. It is okay if they are overlapping. I can fit all of the slices from one apple in my air fryer at a time.

Sprinkle on more cinnamon and nutmeg as desired.

Time to cook these apple chips up. Place the basket in the air fryer. Then set the temp to 300F which is right around 150C.

Now cook using increments of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes pull out the basket and give the apple chips a shake then rearrange them flat again. This will promote even cooking. Replace the basket and cook for another 5 minutes. Keep doing this until they are browned.

Thin air fryer apple chips will take about 15 minutes and the thick ones will take 20 to 25 minutes.

Remove any slices that are brown, these will be the thinnest slices. And place them in a bowl. We don’t want to overcook those.

Although they are browned they may feel soft at first. Don’t worry they will crisp up as they cool.

Time to serve up those apple chips. A yummy healthy snack to make using that air fryer. Enjoy!

How long do air fryer apple chips last?

Dried air fryer apple chips will last several weeks. Just store them in an airtight container at room temperature in a cool dark place like a pantry. They will lose their crispiness over time.

Ingredients

  • 1 Apple
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon optional

Instructions

  • Rinse and dry the apple.
  • Slice the apple into thin chips. You can core it first if desired. Make sure to remove any apple seeds. A mandolin works great!
  • Place the slices in the air fryer basket and arrange them flat. They can overlap. Spray with a bit of cooking spray if desired. But it is not necessary. Sprinkle on some cinnamon and or nutmeg.
  • Cook the apple slices for 5 minutes at 300F/150C. Then give them a shake. Cook for another 5 minutes. Then give them a shake. The slices will curl and shrink as that happens, separate any slices that are stuck together.
  • Keep cooking in increments of 5 minutes until the apple chips are lightly browned. The thinner the chips the quicker they will cook. It will only take 15 to 20 minutes to cook them.
  • Remove and place in a bowl or on a wire rack to cool down. As they cool they will crisp up. Enjoy!
