I love baked potatoes and I love using my air fryer. If you love both of those too you have got to try this air fryer baked potatoes recipe. They are so easy to make and the outside turns out crispy and tasty and the inside is soft and fluffy. This is my favorite way to make baked potatoes especially if I only want to make 2 to 4 of them.

Ingredients

two Russet potatoes on a white cutting board next to olive oil and salt, and an air fryer.

To make baked potatoes in an air fryer you need just a few simple ingredients:

  • Potatoes – I prefer to use Russet potatoes but you can do this method with pretty much any potato. Make sure they are all around the same size and shape, that will help them all cook evenly.
  • Oil – I like to use olive oil or avocado oil, but other cooking oils will work too, especially ghee.
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Pepper
  • Many other optional toppings like sour cream, bacon, cheese, onions, etc.

How to make air fryer baked potatoes

Hand poking potatoes with a fork.

Begin by rinsing your potatoes really well and then dry them with a paper towel or a clean kitchen towel. Next, poke several holes in each potato using a fork. The holes in the potatoes will allow steam to be released while the potatoes are cooking, preventing them from cracking or exploding.

Sprinkling salt on oiled up Russet potatoes.

Next spray on some cooking oil like olive oil or avocado oil. If you don’t have a spray bottle just brush it one with a basting brush or just rub it on with your hands. Then sprinkle on some salt as well. This will help make an amazing crispy outer skin.

Hand forking air fried baked potatoes in the basket.

Add the potatoes to the air fryer basket and put the basket in the air fryer. Set the temp to 400F/205C and then the timer for 40 to 75 minutes depending on the size of the potatoes. For medium potatoes like those shown here 55 minutes works great.

At the 30 minutes mark pull out the basket and use tongs to flip the potatoes over. Then continue air frying them the rest of the way. They are done with they are fork tender. If they are still firm, cook them another 10 minutes.

Serve the baked potatoes

Baked potatoes with butter, salt, and pepper

Time to serve up those baked potatoes or “jacket potatoes” as they are known in other countries. I like to add butter, salt, and pepper as well as numerous other toppings like sour cream, shredded cheese, bacon, onions, chives, etc. Enjoy!

How long do air fryer baked potatoes last?

They will definitely be best right after they are cooked. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. Then just heat them back up in the air fryer for around 5 minutes or so.

Will this work in any air fryer?

Yes, this should work the same whether you have the basket air fryer or the tray kind.

What are the best potatoes to use for baked potatoes?

I think the king of the potatoes when it comes to baked potatoes are Russets, the skin crisps up really nicely and the interior gets soft and flaky and fluffy. But really you can use whatever potatoes you have available, just remember baking times will vary depending on the size and the shape of the potatoes.

Notes

NOTE: Different-sized potatoes will cook differently in the air fry. For small potatoes start with 35 to 40 minutes for really large ones you may need to go up to 75 minutes.
NOTE: There is no need to preheat the air fryer.
