Time to learn how to cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer. This is one of my favorite ways to cook them. If you love using the air fryer and love eating sweet potatoes, give this air fryer sweet potatoes recipe a try!
Ingredients

To make amazing air fryer sweet potatoes, you need just a few simple ingredients:
- Sweet Potatoes – It doesn’t matter the variety you choose, as you can see, I have two different kinds in the picture above. Just try and keep them roughly the same shape; the longer, skinnier ones cook faster than the short, stout, really fat ones.
- Oil – I usually use olive oil, but avocado oil, coconut oil, etc., will also work. You only need a tiny bit. And technically, it is optional. But it helps to get a nice outer skin.
- Salt – this is optional too
- Toppings for after – butter, salt, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, brown sugar, marshmallows, etc.
All the amounts will be listed below in the recipe card.

Tools/Equipment
- Air Fryer (this is my favorite one)
- Tongs
How to cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer

Begin by prepping the sweet potatoes. Choose sweet potatoes that are roughly the same size; they don’t have to be exact, but I don’t recommend having one small thin one and one big fat one cooking at the same time.
Rinse each sweet potato really well and then dry them with a paper towel or a kitchen towel. Poke holes in each one with a fork. About four different spots on the sweet potato will suffice. This will allow steam to be released from the inside of the sweet potato while it cooks.
Then lightly cover each with olive oil or another oil like avocado oil, coconut oil, etc. I generally just use my manual pump oil sprayer and put less than a tsp or so of oil on the sweet potato, then use my hands and wipe it all over evenly. This thin bit of oil will help any seasonings stick as well as help get the skin crispier.
Add a bit of salt to the skin.

Place the sweet potato or up to as many as you can fit in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Then put the basket in the air fryer and air fry at 400°F/205C for 30 to 40 minutes until fork tender. Check them at 30 minutes if the skin is getting too burned, you can reduce the temp to 375°F/190 °C for the rest of the time.
NOTE: The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the sweet potato as well as how many you are doing at once. In my air fryer, two medium sweet potatoes take 35 to 40 minutes to be fork-tender.
PRO TIP: If you are short on time, you can place them in the microwave for 3 to 5 minutes first, then finish them in the air fryer for around 15 minutes.
Remove the sweet potatoes with tongs and serve them however you like.
Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows

If you love your sweet potatoes with marshmallow, slice them in half and then use your fork to “fluff up” the sweet potato a bit and smash down the sides so they sit evenly on the pan.
Add a bit of butter and salt, then take some large marshmallows and slice them in half and put them on top. You can use mini marshmallows if desired or spread marshmallow fluff, whatever you like.

Place the pan on the top rack in your oven and set the oven to broil. Make sure to keep an eye on them, because they cook quickly and burn quickly. Once the tops are golden brown, remove them from the oven and serve warm.
You can certainly try doing this part in the air fryer as well. Depending on your model, the air fryer might blow the light marshmallows off the sweet potato before they get brown.
This makes an excellent side dish for Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner.
Other ways to serve the sweet potatoes

Another way I like to serve them when not putting marshmallows on top is to do just butter, salt, garlic powder, maybe some pepper or brown sugar, or a mix of cinnamon and white sugar. It is so good that way.
Enjoy!!
How long do air fryer sweet potatoes last?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. I just reheat them in the air fryer, too.
