I am a huge fan of apple desserts and I particularly love this homemade apple crisp recipe.

Whether it is apple pie, apple tarts, apple roses, or apple fritters, etc. I can’t get enough of apple desserts and recipes made with apples. This apple crisp dessert is no exception. It is so full of flavor and a perfect treat to make and serve during the Fall and Holidays, or any time of the year you are craving apples.

This apple crisp recipe is so easy to make, if I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get baking!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients

Apples, oats, sugar, flour, butter, and spices in glass bowls on a table.

In order to make this delicious apple crisp, you need the following easy to find ingredients, most of which you probably already have at home:

  • Apples – I like to use Granny Smith apples, but you can use whatever kind of apples that you like.
  • Sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Lemon juice
  • Brown sugar – You can use light or dark brown sugar.
  • Flour – Use all-purpose/plain flour.
  • Oats – The old fashion oats work the best.
  • Salt
  • Butter – It should be very cold.

Toppings

  • Ice cream – I love adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Caramel Sauce – You can’t go wrong with caramel and apples!

Tools

  • 8×8 pan, buttered or sprayed with kitchen spray
  • Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Spoon
  • Pastry cutter or fork

Step 2: How to make an apple crisp

Cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice and apples in a glass bowl.

Begin by preheating the oven to 350 F/176 C. Wash, peel, and core the apples. Then chop them up into small chunks. You can also leave the peel on if you like. Place them in a medium bowl.

Add the white sugar, half of the ground cinnamon, and the lemon juice to the bowl of apples and mix/stir them all together until evenly coated.

Medium glass bowl full of green apples covered in a sugar and cinnamon mixture.

This is the main filling for the apple crisp.

Step 3: Make the topping

Hand whisking together the oats, sugar, flour, etc. in a small bowl.

In a medium bowl add the brown sugar, flour, salt, oats, and the other half of the cinnamon, and whisk or stir those together.

Hand with pastry blender mixing in the cubed butter with the sugar and flour mixture to create the crumble.

Take cold butter and cut it up into small cubes, or take frozen butter and grate it on a box grater. Now use a fork or pastry blender/cutter and blend in the butter.

After a while once it is all incorporated the mixture will look like coarse crumbs or damp sand.

Step 4: Bake the homemade apple crisp

Hand pouring in a bowl full of apples into an 8x8 buttered pan.

Take an 8×8 or 11×7 inch pan and butter the bottom and sides, or you can use vegetable shortening or just spray it with cooking spray. Pour the chopped apples in the pan.

Unbaked apple crisp in an 8x8 metal pan ready to be baked.

Evenly sprinkle the topping on top of the apples completing the apple crisp.

Bake it in the oven, middle rack position, for 40 to 50 minutes until the top is nice and golden brown. If you like the apples to be more soft, bake it closer to 50 minutes. Check it after about 30 minutes, if the top is getting too brown, place foil over the top.

In my oven it takes right around 43 to 45 minutes .

Pan with a baked apple crisp in it sitting on a wooden table.

Once it has baked remove the apple crisp from the oven and allow it to cool for 15 minutes or so. Then you can plate it, and top it with ice cream, caramel sauce, etc. if you like.

Drizzle of caramel being poured on top of a scoop of ice cream and apple crisp.

I encourage you to try the recipe exactly as it is at first. Then if you make it again, you can play around with the sweetness. If you like it more sweet you can add a bit more sugar, or less if you like it less sweet. Add more or less of the lemon juice, etc. Enjoy!

How long does apple crisp last?

Once it is baked you can store it at room temp, covered, for a few days or in the fridge for about 5 to 6 days if covered or placed in an airtight container. It will taste the best if eaten within a few days. You can also freeze the apple crisp before or after baking it.

  • Pastry cutter or fork

Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples I like to use granny smith peeled and chopped (you can leave the peel on if you like)
  • 3 Tbsp of white granulated sugar 45g
  • 2 tsp. of ground cinnamon divided (10g)
  • 1 to 3 tsp. of lemon juice 5 to 15 mL
  • 1 cup of brown sugar light or dark (200g)
  • 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour/plain flour 95g
  • 3/4 cup of old fashioned Oats 115g
  • 1/4 tsp. of salt 1g
  • 1/2 cup of cold cubed unsalted butter 115g

Topping (Optional)

  • Ice Cream
  • Caramel Sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F (176 C). Peel and chop up your apples. You can leave the peel on if you wish.
Next add your white granulated sugar, 1 tsp. of your 2 tsp. of ground cinnamon, and your lemon juice. Then with a spoon mix them all together, until the apples are well coated.
  • Now in a large bowl add the brown sugar, flour, oats, salt, remaining 1 tsp. of cinnamon, and then whisk to combine.
  • Take cold butter and cut it up into small chunks and add it to the topping mixture. Then use a fork or pastry blender/cutter to work in the butter. Keep cutting it and blending it until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs or damp sand.
  • Butter an 8×8 inch or 7×11 inch pan. You can use shortening or kitchen spray as well. Pour in the apple mixture and then layer the crisp topping evenly on top. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until the top is golden brown. Check after 30 minutes, if the top is getting too brown add some foil.
  • Once it comes out of the oven let it cool for a few minutes, then plate it while it is still warm. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle some caramel sauce on top. Enjoy! : )
