I love cinnamon and sugar-related treats and baked goods. From cinnamon rolls to churros to cinnamon twists, etc. I can’t get enough of cinnamon haha. And one of my all-time snacks involving those delicious ingredients is these homemade cinnamon sugar tortilla chips.
If you love cinnamon and sugar and you love tortilla chips you have got to give this easy cinnamon sugar tortilla chips recipe a try. You can serve them plain or with some fresh diced strawberries, strawberry sauce, drizzled chocolate, etc.
It makes a perfect snack for game day, parties, etc., or a great snack for the kids when they come home from school. In fact, making these with the kids would be a fun activity. Maybe you want to make some dessert nachos with them? Lots of ideas you can try with this tasty treat.
From start to finish they are ready in under 20 minutes, a great quick snack to have for breakfast or throughout the day. And it is a nice way to use leftover tortillas. But I must warn you, they are so addicting! And like always, if I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get baking!
Step 1: Gather the ingredients and tools
In order to make these incredible cinnamon sugar tortilla chips you need just a few simple ingredients:
- Tortillas – You can use homemade flour tortillas or corn tortillas or storebought. I prefer using flour tortillas. They just seem to turn out better. Normally I will use a leftover package of tortillas that has maybe 3 or 4 of them in it. These homemade cinnamon tortilla chips are great for that!
- Cinnamon – The star of this dish is definitely cinnamon!
- Sugar – Use normal white granulated sugar.
- Butter – You may use unsalted or salted butter. Or you can certainly use avocado, olive, coconut oil, or another cooking oil.
Tools
- Basting brush
- Bowls
- Pizza roller or knife
- Sheet pan or cooking sheet
- Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat
Step 2: How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips at home
You can make these in either the oven or the air fryer. I personally like them better in the oven, but an air fryer is a great option, especially if you just want to make a few chips and don’t want to turn on the oven. This recipe will focus on the oven, but I will briefly mention the air fryer steps as well.
Begin by preheating the oven to 375 F/190 C. Make sure the main rack is in the middle position.
Now melt the butter. You can do this in the microwave, it only takes a few seconds. Or you can melt the butter in a pot on the stovetop, or in an oven-safe bowl in the oven while it is preheating.
Next, baste the tops of the tortillas with melted butter. I always use unsalted butter, but salted works great too. Or if you choose to use something like coconut or avocado oil, olive oil spray, or other nonstick cooking spray, you can do that as well. Margarine will also work.
Step 3: Cinnamon and sugar time!
Now it is time to mix that cinnamon with that sugar. You can do that in a small bowl and use a spoon to sprinkle it on the tops of the tortillas.
My preferred method is to combine the cinnamon and sugar in an old spice shaker container. I always have one of these handy, because I use cinnamon and sugar so much.
Then just sprinkle on a thin layer of cinnamon sugar mixture across the whole top of the tortilla.
Now all you have to do is slice those tortillas into chip shapes. You can do strips or wedges, whatever you want to do. I always make the “pie” wedges. Use a knife or a pizza cutter. A pizza roller/cutter works amazing for this.
Step 4: Bake those Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips
Place the tortilla pieces in a single layer and not overlapping on a sheet pan, baking sheet, or cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
You can do several at home time and they can be fairly close together. The more you have on the pan the longer it will take in the oven to bake.
Bake on the middle rack again at 375 F/190 C for 8 to 15 minutes until nice and golden brown and crispy/crunchy. If you are only doing one tortilla it will be closer to 10 minutes. I usually do three at a time, which makes 24 chips and takes around 15 minutes.
When the cinnamon sugar tortilla chips come out of the oven allow them to cool for a few minutes on the pan before serving.
AIR FRYER METHOD
If you would like to make them in the air fryer, only do one tortilla at a time which is about 8 chips. Arrange them flat on the bottom of the basket. Cook at 375 F/190 C for 5 to 6 minutes until crispy.
You can serve them as is, or with a bowl of diced fruit like strawberries. Or something like fresh mango salsa. You can get a little fancy and drizzle a bit of melted chocolate on top of them as well and serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. There are lots of ways you can present and serve them. I can’t get enough of this easy recipe.
Enjoy!
How long do cinnamon sugar tortilla chips last?
Store any leftovers in a zip lock bag or an airtight container at room temp for a few days. Mine never last longer than a day or two, so addicting, haha!
