What can you do with puff pastry? Make cinnamon twists of course, along with many other things. I particularly love these homemade cinnamon twists. They are so extremely easy to make with just four ingredients!
The reason why I love these delectable pastries is they are so quick to make and are perfect for breakfast, brunch, snacks, or as a dessert. And it gives you one more thing you can make with that puff pastry that you have. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get baking!
Step 1: Gather the ingredients
In order to make these yummy cinnamon twists you need just a few ingredients.
- Puff pastry – You can use store-bought or homemade puff pastry if you like. I use store-bought on occasion because it is so quick and easy to use, but homemade is definitely better.
- Sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Butter
Tools
- Sheet pan or cookie sheet
- Silicone mat or parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Ruler
- Pizza cutter or knife
- Shaker for cinnamon and sugar or a spoon
- Basting brush
Step 2: How to make cinnamon twists with puff pastry
First, I want to point out that these puff pastry cinnamon twists are definitely different than the classic Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists. So if you are expecting these to taste like those, then they just won’t.
Begin by preheating the oven to 400 F/205 C. Then mix together your sugar and your cinnamon in a small bowl. You can also just place the sugar and cinnamon in your shaker and shake it to blend it together.
I want to point out you won’t use all of this cinnamon and sugar, you will most likely only wind up using about a third of it, if not less.
It is always nice to have a shaker with cinnamon and sugar mixed especially if you use it so frequently as I do. If you don’t want any leftover, then I recommend using much less sugar and cinnamon.
Step 3: Prepare the puff pastry
If using frozen puff pastry, that it out 30 to 40 minutes before you want to make the cinnamon twists. Then roll it out onto a counter or silicone mat. You won’t need to roll it too much.
Then take a ruler and cut along the edge, every inch or so, making several strips of puff pastry. You wind up getting about 9 strips from one sheet of puff pastry.
Step 4: Cinnamon and butter, yes please!
Now melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave or in a pot on the stovetop. Then baste the top of the puff pastry strips with butter.
Next, sprinkle the top liberally with cinnamon and sugar. Then flip each strip over and repeat the process with the butter and cinnamon and sugar.
Another method you can try is pour the cinnamon and sugar in a small sheet pan and just put the strips in the pan along with the cinnamon and sugar. I prefer the first method myself.
Step 5: Cinnamon twists time!
Now grab each strip with clean hands of course and twist the ends which will in turn twist the puff pastry strip. Place them about an inch a part on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
Bake them in the oven, middle rack position, for 15 to 20 minutes until they puff up and are golden brown.
Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes. If you like you can drizzle melted chocolate over the tops of them and or add some powdered sugar as well.
Also you can serve them with some homemade strawberry sauce to dip them in. Enjoy!
How long do homemade cinnamon twists last?
If stored in an airtight container or a plastic bag, they will last a few days at room temperature or about 4 to 5 days in the fridge. They will taste better fresh, however.

Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry homemade or frozen
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar 100g
- 1 to 2 tsp. of ground cinnamon 3 to 6g
- 2 tbsp. butter 28g
Instructions
- Remove the puff pastry from the freezer 40 minutes before making the cinnamon twists. Preheat the oven to 400 F/205 C.
- Mix together the cinnamon and sugar. Put it in an empty spice container or just use it in bowl with a spoon.
- Unfold the puff pastry on the counter or a silicone mat or piece of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin and roll it out just a bit stretching it about an extra inch or two on each side.
- Cut the puff pastry into 9 equal strips using a ruler as a guide and a knife or pizza roller to make the cuts.
- Melt the butter in the microwave or in a pot on the stovetop. It only needs about 25 to 30 seconds in the microwave. Then baste the tops of the pastry strips with butter. Sprinkle the tops evenly with cinnamon and sugar and then flip all the strips over. And then repeat with the butter and cinnamon and sugar on this side.
- Using clean hands grab the ends of the strips and twist it a few times. Then place it onto a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Bake the cinnamon twists for 15 to 20 minutes until they puff up and are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving them. Enjoy!
