I love chicken! And this crispy baked chicken wings recipe is so awesome. The wings come out so flavorful and it is so hard to just eat a couple of them.

You can never go wrong serving a plate of crispy baked chicken wings for a game day party, board game get-together, family event, etc. Count on them going fast, so you may want to make lots of them.

Chicken is something I have always enjoyed eating, ever since I was little. While deep-fried seems to be more popular, oven-baked chicken is more and more popular because it is healthier. Either way, chicken is awesome. These crispy baked chicken wings are super easy to make with just a handful of ingredients and easy cleanup. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients

Bowl of uncooked chicken wings, and other ingredients in bowls on a wooden table.

In order to make crispy baked chicken wings at home, you need just a handful of ingredients:

  • Wings – I normally get a large frozen bag of wings and drumsticks.
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Ground black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne pepper – Optional, if you want a bit of a kick.
  • Butter – Use either salted or unsalted butter.

Tools

  • 1 large ziplock plastic bag
  • Tongs
  • Sheet pan
  • Silicon mat, parchment paper, or foil (makes clean up on the pan a lot easier!)

Step 2: How to make homemade crispy baked chicken wings

Hand pouring a bowl of spices into a large zip lock plastic bag.

Preheat the oven to 425 F/218 C. Take the thawed chicken wings and pat them dry with a paper towel. Then take the dry ingredients, flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and optional cayenne, or chili powder and put them in a large zip lock bag or a large bowl. I like using a bag. Shake until mixed. Or if using a bowl, whisk them all together.

Shaking chicken wings in a bag of spices.

Use tongs and grab the wings and place them in the bag, or bowl if you are using a large bowl. Then shake the bag to coat the wings evenly with the dry mixture.

If using a bowl, you can just stir them in the mixture with the tongs, or put a lid on the bowl and shake it.

Step 3: Bake the chicken wings until crispy

Sheet pan lined with a silicone baking mat with several chicken wings on it.

Melt the butter and pour half of it on top of a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Then place the wings on top. Pour the remaining melted butter over the tops of the wings.

Make sure the wings are spread out and not touching each other. Bake them on the middle rack of the oven for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes pull the wings out of the oven, and use tongs to flip them over. Bake an additional 15 minutes until the chicken wings are nice and crispy.

Several freshly baked crispy chicken wings on a pan.

After removing them from the oven allow them to sit for about 10 minutes to cool before serving them.

TIP: You can baste them with barbecue sauce or another sauce while baking if you like. And then baste the other side at the 15-minute mark. A nice easy sauce is to mix together dijon mustard, honey, and molasses.

Then serve them up with a bowl of BBQ sauce, Ranch dressing, etc. Enjoy!

How long to crispy baked chicken wings last?

If kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator, the wings will last 3 to 4 days. Make sure to refrigerate within two hours of making them. Don’t let them sit at room temp longer than that.

Aww yeah. You can’t beat good winds. I used to only eat them fried, but then I discovered that baked wings done right are just as delicious and crispy, and they’re far better for you.
