Have you ever heard of the Hidden Rose Apple? While it isn’t the rarest apple in the world, it is still fairly fare and it is known for its distinct red or pink flesh. I love apples and love trying new varieties. While I have tried many of them, there are over 7,500 varieties of apples in the world! So many more apples to try. But in this post, I focus my attention on this unique apple the Hidden Rose Apple, where it comes from, its health benefits, how to eat it, and what it tastes like. Recently I got to try it and it was sure a delight!
Where does the hidden rose apple come from?
The Hidden Rose Apple, also known as the Mountain Rose or Airlie Red Flesh apple, was originally discovered in Kings Valley, Airlie, to be exact, Oregon, in the 1960s on the property of Lucky and Audrey Newell. The family discovered the original tree growing near an abandoned well. But never did anything with it.
Later, the land was sold. It was rediscovered by Louis Kimzey, a former field manager for Thomas Paine Farms. He partnered with Eric Schwartz, and the first commercial orchard was started in 1992. Later, the name Hidden Rose Apples was trademarked in 2001. Thomas Paine Farms is the sole and exclusive grower of this apple, and it is distributed nationally by Dragonberry Produce.
You may or may not have access to this apple, depending on whether it is distributed to a store near you. You can always buy it online at a place like Miami Fruit, which is where I got mine.

How to Eat the Hidden Rose Apple
You eat this apple like any other apple. You can bite into it, you can slice it, peel it, etc. It can also be used in any recipes that call for apples, like applesauce, apple cider, apple pie, etc. However you eat it, you can’t help but admire the bright color of this pink-fleshed apple.
What does the hidden rose apple taste like?
First, this apple does taste like an apple. It has a bit of tartness to it with a mildly sweet flavor, and hints of strawberry lemonade. You could very well call this strawberry lemonade apple, and not be too far off. Maybe even notes of fruit punch in there as well. It does have a somewhat mealy texture to it, and is not quite as crisp as the “crisp” varieties of apples. But it is still very tasty and worth trying if you love tasting new apples and trying different fruit in general.
