Along with being a chocolate addict, I am also a bread addict. I have a whole category here on my website devoted to all things bread! One of my favorite types of bread is yummy homemade garlic bread.

There is something comforting about eating a plate of pasta with a slice of homemade garlic bread or cheesy garlic bread also known as garlic toast. I like to use part of the bread and sop up the leftover pasta sauce on the plate. So yummy!

For me, it is heaven on a plate. If you are a fan of garlic bread give this recipe a try. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get baking!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients and tools

Fresh loaf of French bread on a wooden cutting board with cheese, butter, parsley, and garlic.

In order to make homemade garlic bread or cheesy garlic bread you need just a few ingredients:

  • Bread – You need some sort of loaf of bread. A classic style to use is French bread. But I have made it with sandwich bread, even hot dog buns. Use whatever bread you like.
  • Butter – Butter is half of the equation that makes garlic bread so delicious. Use salted or unsalted butter.
  • Italian Parsely – I love cutting fresh parsely and using that, although you can used dried too if you like.
  • Garlic – You can’t have homemade garlic bread without the garlic! Use fresh garlic or garlic powder.
  • Cheese – And an optional ingredient that I like to put on half of the slices is an Italian cheese blend. Adding cheese on top takes it to a whole new level of culinary yumminess. The cheese blend has parmesan, provolone, mozzarella, and a few other cheeses in it.

Tools

  • Knife
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Sheet pan or cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat

Step 2: How to make homemade garlic bread or cheesy garlic bread

Hand with knife slicing a loaf of French bread

Preheat the oven to 425 F/218 C. Make sure the rack is in the middle position.

Begin with a loaf of French bread. Although you can use whatever kind of bread that you want. I have even made this with plain sandwich bread and leftover hot dog buns which is great.

Slice the bread in half in the middle and then in half again, splitting the bread in half. You will wind up with 4 large slices. Then place on a sheet pan or cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Similar to if you were making French bread pizza.

Hand mixing garlic, parsley, and butter together in a small bowl.

Add the butter to a bowl and soften it in the microwave or leave it out for about an hour before wanting to use it.

Chop up the fresh parsley and the fresh garlic and add it to the bowl with the butter and mix until combined.

There you go a simple garlic butter compound. Super easy, right?

Also, if you like you can grate some cheese or buy the pre-grated cheese. I really like to use the Italian blend of shredded cheese. It has parmesan, provolone, mozzarella, etc. Because cheesy garlic bread is absolutely amazing.

Step 3: Bake the homemade garlic bread

Garlic bread ready to be baked.

Now baste the tops of the bread very generously with the garlic butter. If you want cheesy garlic bread sprinkle cheese on top of that, generously. I just use a spatula or a spoon to spread the garlic butter on top of the bread.

I usually will make half with cheese and half without.

Bake the garlic bread for 12 to 18 minutes until golden brown all around the edges and lightly brown on top. Remove from the oven allow it to cool for a few minutes then place on a wire rack to cool completely.

Now you can leave the slices big, or cut them up even further. I usually will slice those slices in thirds. It makes it easier to eat and created more servings. I usually will get 12 servings from a 1 pound loaf.

Enjoy!

How long does homemade garlic bread last?

I store leftovers in a ziplock bag or an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. You can also freeze it for a few months. Then I will reheat it in the microwave, air fryer, or in the oven.

This bread is so good! So perfect with spaghetti and other Italian foods… but I love it, too with a good bowl of soup! Like broccoli cheddar or even chicken noodle! Super delish!
