Step 1: Gather the ingredients and tools

First, for this homemade pizza sauce recipe, we need some ingredients and tools. You will need the following:

  • Crushed tomatoes in sauce/puree
  • Whole peeled tomatoes in sauce/juice – (San Marzano style if you can find it, it is a great brand from Italy)
  • Parmesan cheese
  • White granulated sugar
  • Ground black pepper
  • Salt
  • Italian seasoning – (Italian seasoning is a blend of dried herbs like basil, oregano, rosemary, and thyme)
  • Fennel seeds
  • Oregano
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Minced onion
  • Fresh Garlic Cloves
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Tools

  • Blender or very large food processor
  • Saucepan
  • Spatula

Step 2: The Pizza Sauce Tomatoes

Tomatoes are the main ingredient of the homemade pizza sauce recipe. Take a blender and add in our can of tomato chunks.

Next let’s take the whole peeled tomatoes from the other can and squeeze each tomato getting all the juices out, then break up the whole tomato in your clean hands as well. This is especially important to do if you don’t have a blender or food processor.

Then add in the rest of the juice/sauce from the can.

Step 3: Spices and blending

Next let’s add in all of our spices, the sugar, black pepper, Italian seasonings, fennel, and oregano. Also, add in the parmesan cheese. Put the lid on and blend until nice and smooth. Or if you are using a large bowl and hand crank, then do that.

Step 4: Sauté onion and garlic

Next, let’s take a large pot and set the burner to medium heat.

Then add in your extra virgin olive oil. After the oil heats up, add the onions and the garlic, and cook them for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5: Blending in the tomato sauce

Now pour in the tomato mixture and stir to blend it in with the oil and onions and garlic.

Step 6: Taste and cook the pizza sauce

Next, give it a little taste. You may want to add in a tsp. of salt or more to taste and maybe a tsp. of garlic powder.

Then stir occasionally and bring the sauce to a boil. You will see bubbles emerging from the top of the sauce. Once that happens, turn the heat down to medium-low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes.

Stir the sauce occasionally. After the 15 minutes, turn the heat off and let the sauce cool before using it on your pizza dough. It makes enough for about 8 to 10 pizzas depending on how much sauce you use for each pizza. Enjoy!

Note – Homemade pizza sauce will last 3 to 5 days in the fridge. Or you can put it in freezer bags and freeze it. In the freezer, it will last a few months.

Thank you so much for posting this recipe that I found with a simple Google search. This sauce is amazing! It’s the best pizza sauce I have ever made. Even my college kids love it. I can now end my search for a great pizza recipe. The dough recipe is amazing also.

I tried this recipe and it’s honestly delicious. I’ve always wanted a specific tasting pizza sauce on the pizzas I order from takeaways but haven’t found any that do the sauce how I like, this recipe is exactly how my hubby and I like pizza sauces to taste. I highly recommend people to try it. Absolutely delicious!

  3. When do you add the Parmesan cheese?

  4. I tried the pizza sauce and felt something might be missing. I am wondering if salt was left out of the written recipe or if “salt” was mistakenly added to the instructions, “ Next let’s add in all of our spices, the sugar, salt, black pepper, Italian seasonings, fennel, and oregano.“. Thanks

    • Hi Terry! Such a great catch, thank you. Yes, salt is supposed to be in the recipe, however, you aren’t supposed to add it at step 3. You add it in at step 6, to taste. 🙂 I hope that clears it up a little bit. It was missing from the printed recipe too.

I’ve been a fan of crushed tomatoes for years now. So few recipes utilize them and instead insist on using tomato sauce instead. I’m so happy to have found a delicious recipe using my favorite form of canned tomatoes! Great pizza sauce. Delicious.
