In this yummy fruit review, I will teach you all about the Lansium domesticum or Lanzones, also known as Langsat, Longkong, or Duku. You will learn where they come from, their health benefits, how to eat Lanzones, and what they taste like. This is one of my favorite tropical fruits!

Where do Lanzones or Langsat come from, and where do they grow?

A map of where Lanzones or Langsat come from and grow.

Lanzones grows in tropical lowland forest areas, places like Florida, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, like Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as other parts of the world, not mentioned or shown on the above map. I first tried them in the Philippines in the late 1990s. The Philippines was such an amazing country because I got to try all sorts of amazing fruits while living there for nearly 2 years. They were at a much lower price when I got them there locally.

Langsat fruit, or Lanzones, are also rare in the US, even though they do grow in a few States. Chances are you will not find them at your local grocery store or the local International market. I ordered mine from Miami Fruit, which is a popular lanzones vendor as well as other tropical and exotic fruits.

How to eat Lazones or Langsat

Hand holding a peeled lanzones

First, you need to find out if they are ripe. If buying them at a market or store, they should already be ripe, and you can eat them right away or freeze them, or put them in the fridge. If getting them from Miami Fruit, they will come frozen and packaged cold.

They will be straw colored and round or oval. There will be no green color on the skin, and golden brown with some dark specs is the sweetest.

To eat them, peel them and eat them whole, but don’t eat the skin or seeds. I normally will separate the fresh arils and eat those one by one. Eat the fruit by itself, or incorporate it into fruit salads. They can also be juiced to make a refreshing beverage, or make jams and jellies with it, sorbets, or other fruit sauces and syrups.

What does Langat fruit or Lanzones taste like?

This juicy tropical fruit is very sweet and slightly tangy, kind of like a mix between a lychee and a pomelo. Both of which you can find here on my website. The sweetness is a pleasant tropical sweetness with a refreshing, tangy citrusy flavor. Some people describe it as tasting like a mix between a grape and a grapefruit.

There you go, now you know how to eat lanzones, where it comes from, its health benefits, and what it tastes like. I hope you enjoyed learning about this amazing fruit. Have you ever eaten it? Let me know in the comments!

We are a tropical fruit farm in Hawaii and in our third year of harvesting. We have 26 trees with half in production. Also we are learning as much as we can about pruning, keeping them fungus free, when to harvest and so much more. So thank you very much for sharing your knowledge about the Lang Sat — we have Long Kongs
