Are you looking for a summer treat that is refreshing, easy to make, and doesn’t take all kinds of ingredients? You are in luck! Learn how to make an amazing orange sorbet with just 4 simple ingredients. The perfect treat for you and your family when it is hot outside or whenever you want it.

Ingredients

Orange juice, water, sugar, and salt on a wooden cutting board in glass containers sitting in from of an ice cream machine.

To make this homemade orange sorbet, you need these simple ingredients:

  • Orange juice – This is the main ingredient for the sorbet. Make sure to use an orange juice that is 100% juice and NOT from concentrate; it will turn out better.
  • Water – I always use filtered water.
  • Sugar – Normal white granulated sugar. This is needed so you get the right consistency, and the sorbet becomes scoopable.
  • Salt – A little bit of salt to add balance.

Equipment

  • Ice cream machine: This is the one I love, but any ice cream machine should work.
  • Spoon
  • Freezer-safe container

How to Make Orange Sorbet At Home

Hand with spoon mixing sugar and hot water together in a glass measuring cup on a wooden cutting board next to a measuring cup of orange juice and in front of an ice cream machine.

Start by making a simple syrup. Heat up the water until boiling; it will only take 45 to 60 seconds in the microwave or a bit longer in a pot on the stovetop burner. Then add the sugar to the hot water and stir with a spoon until all dissolved and the liquid is clear; this is the simple syrup.

Pour the orange juice, the simple syrup, and the salt into your ice cream machine. Any machine should work. Turn it on and let it run for around 24 minutes. That is how long it takes my machine to make sorbet. It will just depend on the one that you are using.

Hand with a spoonful of homemade orange sorbet resting above the ice cream machine bowl.

Once the machine stops, you will be left with an orange sorbet that is a bit firmer than a slushy as far as the consistency goes. You can eat it now or transfer it to a freezer-safe container and freeze for a few hours to firm up even more.

Do I have to use an Ice Cream Machine to Make Sorbet?

No! There is a way around using an ice cream machine. Pour all the ingredients (after making the simple syrup, of course) into a freezer-safe container and place it in the freezer. Every 30 minutes, pull it out and stir vigorously, which will break up the ice crystals. Keep doing this until it thickens up.

How long does homemade orange sorbet last?

It will last a few weeks in the freezer, but honestly, I doubt it will last that long, haha. I am sure it will get gobbled up in a few days.
