These muddy buddies are so awesome. They also go by the name of “puppy chow.” Such an easy treat to make and very popular around Christmas and the Holidays. And they are a bit addicting, haha.

It is always nice to have a bowl of this comforting snack. My only problem is, I wind up eating way too much of it. Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow is very popular here in the United States. Most Chex boxes actually have the recipe printed on the back or side of the box. Also, these are gluten-free!

Make the holidays bright with this amazing treat. They are so simple to make, and come together in minutes. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients

Chex, chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar in bowls on a wooden table.

In order to make homemade muddy buddies you need just six easy-to-find ingredients:

  • Chex – You can use rice or corn Chex cereal. And you can use the regular, chocolate, or peanut butter-flavored Chex.
  • Chocolate – Use whatever chocolate you like, semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate. Normally chocolate chips are used to make puppy chow, but chocolate bars can be used as well.
  • Butter – Salted or unsalted butter.
  • Peanut butter – Use smooth peanut butter. This homemade peanut butter is awesome, or you can use store-bought.
  • Vanilla extract – This adds flavor, but is not mandatory.
  • Powdered sugar – Use store-bought powdered sugar or you can make homemade powdered sugar.
  • M&Ms, nuts, etc. – These are totally optional.

Tools

  • Microwave-safe bowl or pot
  • Very large bowl
  • Spatula
  • Large plastic bag, optional
  • Lid for the bowl, optional

Step 2: How to make Muddy Buddies at home

Large glass bowl full of rice Chex.

Begin by measuring out the Rice Chex or you can also use corn Chex and place it in a large bowl. It is just a few cups shy of the whole standard box, here in the States.

You can also use the other flavors of Chex or a combination of them. They have chocolate and peanut butter Chex as well, which are super yummy.

Peanut butter, chocolate, and butter in a medium glass bowl.

Add the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter to a microwave-safe bowl. Melt in the microwave using bursts of 30 seconds on high, and then stir, until it is all melted and smooth.

Then mix in the vanilla extract.

NOTE: If you don’t want to use a microwave, you can melt everything in a pot on the stovetop or use the double boiler method on the stovetop as well. Add 1 cup of water to a pot, and place a large metal bowl on top. Add the ingredients to the metal bowl. Set the heat to medium, as the water heats the steam will heat up the bowl, gently melting the ingredients.

Step 3: Coat the Chex cereal

Bowl of muddy buddies before the powdered sugar is added.

Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the bowl of Chex. Use a spatula to stir until the Chex are evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.

Add the chocolate-coated Chex to a bag and then add the powdered sugar and shake it to coat them, or leave them in the large bowl and just stir the powdered sugar with the Chex.

Also, if you have a lid for the bowl, put the lid on and then shake it that way. There are a few options that you can try.

Once covered they are ready. Super easy right? Place in a serving bowl and enjoy!

TIP: If you like you can spruce them up even more by mixing them with M&Ms, nuts, etc.

How long does muddy buddies or puppy chow last?

If you store the muddy buddies or puppy chow in a zip-lock bag or an airtight container, they will last about a week at room temperature or about two weeks in the fridge.
