Learn how to make some amazing peanut butter eggs at home. If you love peanut butter cups, you will absolutely love these. And unlike the Reese’s kind that are flat, these are actually roundish and look like eggs, and they taste better than the Reese’s peanut butter eggs, in my opinion. They have an awesome creamy peanut butter center that is to die for. Let’s get started!

Ingredients

Several ingredients in bowls on a white countertop.

To make homemade peanut butter eggs, you need just a handful of simple ingredients:

  • Peanut butter – You can use whatever kind of peanut butter you want. Even use homemade peanut butter if you like. If you are allergic to peanuts, use almond butter. You can also use crunchy peanut butter if you like.
  • Butter – Unsalted butter or salted butter is optional, but it adds a bit of flavor, so I always add it.
  • Salt – Just a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness a little.
  • Almond flour or peanut flour – I use this to give more body to the eggs, so they keep their shape better, but technically, you don’t need to add it.
  • Powdered sugar – The powdered sugar adds sweetness but also, when mixed in, gives it the playdough texture we need to form the peanut butter eggs.
  • Chocolate – Here is where it gets fun. Use whatever flavor of chocolate that you want, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, white chocolate, or a whole variety of colorful candy melts. Candy melts do dry quicker.
  • Optional decorations – I use a bit of cocoa powder and water to make spots on the eggs.

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Deep glasses for melted chocolate

  • Microwave or double boiler

How to make homemade peanut butter eggs

Bowl filled with peanut butter mixture.

First, make the peanut butter filling. There is no cooking or baking required, which is awesome, and the filling comes together in around 5 minutes or so. This is also the basic filling for my homemade peanut butter cups, minus the almond flour.

Add smooth peanut butter into a large bowl along with softened butter, salt, and the almond flour or peanut flour. Mix those ingredients until well combined. Then add the powdered sugar or confectioner’s sugar about a quarter of it at a time until you are left with the right consistency, which is similar to playdough.

NOTE: The almond flour is optional, however, it adds a bit more body and strength to the filling, making it easier to shape into eggs. Plus, it makes them healthy, right? haha.

Form the eggs and melt the chocolate

Time to form those eggs. Wearing gloves or using clean hands, grab about a large tablespoon worth of peanut butter mixture and shape it into an egg as best as you can. You may also use a cookie scoop to make sure you have the exact amount each time. Don’t worry too much about the egg shape right now, you can shape it later right before dipping.

Several un dipped peanut butter eggs with toothpicks sticking out of them resting in a muffin tin.

Then stick a toothpick in the egg and place it on a piece of parchment paper or a muffin tin lined with paper cups. Place them in the freezer for about 25 to 30 minutes.

Glass dishes full of chocolate chips.

After about 25 minutes of chill time in the freezer, melt the chocolate. Only do one flavor of chocolate at a time. You can use whatever kind of chocolate you want, as mentioned above. Have fun with the colors and flavors.

Melt them in the microwave in a microwave-safe glass or bowl for 25 seconds, then stir, 25 seconds, stir, etc., until fully melted. Add 1 tsp of shortening, vegetable oil, or coconut oil and melt that along with the chocolate to make it extra runny and easier for dipping.

You may also use the double-boiler method to melt the chocolate if you don’t want to use the microwave. Place a small pot with about an inch of water on the burner. Set the heat to medium. Add a Pyrex or metal bowl on top of the pot, but make sure the bottom of the pot does not touch the water. Add the chocolate chips or broken-up chocolate bars to the bowl. As the water heats, the steam will warm the bowl and gently melt the chocolate.

Shape and Dip the Homemade Chocolate Peanut Butter Eggs

Remove a peanut butter egg from the freezer, leave the rest in there, and then shape the cold egg a little more as best as you can to get a nice egg. Then dip it into the melted chocolate while holding the toothpick.

Allow the excess chocolate to drain off and keep holding the toothpick until the egg is a little dry to the touch, which will take a few minutes. Gently remove the toothpick and place the egg on a cutting board, plate, or piece of parchment paper. If you want, you can cover the toothpick hole with melted chocolate.

NOTE: If you let it dry too long until completely firm, it may crack when you remove the toothpick.

OR if you don’t want to hold it for very long, once you dip it in the chocolate coating, slide it off the toothpick onto a piece of parchment paper or wax paper. It will develop a “flat” side. But if you don’t care about that, it goes much quicker this way.

Decorating the Eggs

Time to decorate the peanut butter eggs if you want. They are totally fine as they are, but if you want to give them a little character, you can take a little cocoa powder and mix it with water, then use a fork or small brush and flick it onto the egg, creating a “robin egg” look. You can also use edible food paint or gel and make designs, etc. Another option would be to put different colors of melted chocolate in a piping bag and then make designs on the eggs.

If you are making these peanut butter treats for Easter, a fun thing you can do is put a little Easter grass in individual muffin paper cups and then place a few of the finished eggs in each one.

Or you can stuff an easter basket full of Easter grass and place all the Easter eggs in there. Lots of options for presenting the homemade peanut butter eggs. Maybe you want to make these chocolate egg nests for them? That would be awesome. Have fun with it and be creative!

How long do peanut butter eggs last?

You can store the finished homemade Reese’s eggs at room temperature in an airtight container or zip lock bag, for about a week or so, or in the fridge for a couple of weeks. They may also be frozen. Just place them in an airtight container and freeze for a few months.

Will any nut butter work?

I haven’t tried this with every nut butter, but I imagine it will work fine with pretty much any nut butter.

How can I make homemade peanut butter eggs healthier?

To make these treats healthier, use natural peanut butter and zero-sugar chocolate chips. Also, use less powdered sugar and more almond flour, as long as you get a nice playdough consistency to the filling, the ratios of sugar to almond flour can be different than what I normally use. Also, you can try powdered monkfruit instead of normal powdered cane sugar.

Equipment

  • Toothpicks
  • Bowls
  • Deep glasses for melted chocolate
  • spoon
  • microwave or double boiler

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of peanut butter 250g
  • 1 Tbsp of butter 13g
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of almond flour or peanut flour 60g
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar/confectioner’s sugar 120g
  • 1 to 2 cups of chocolate white, dark, milk, candy melts, etc. (170 to 340g)

Instructions

  • Combine the peanut butter, butter, salt, and almond flour in a large bowl.
  • Add the powdered sugar a little at a time until completely mixed in and you are left with a playdough consistency.
  • Take about a Tbsp or so of filling and shape it into an egg, then stick a toothpick in it. Rest it on parchment paper or a muffin tin with paper cups.
  • Freeze the peanut butter eggs for 25 minutes.
  • Melt the chocolate in the microwave using bursts of 20 seconds and stirring until melted. Or use the double-boiler method, referenced above. Pour it into a deep glass for dipping.
  • Take an egg out of the freezer and further shape it as you like, then dip it in the chocolate. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off, then hold it until almost completely set.
  • Gently remove the toothpick and cover the hole with more chocolate. Then rest it on some parchment paper to dry completely.
  • Or after dipping and allowing the excess to drip off, place it on a piece of parchment paper, which will give it a flat side, but it goes much quicker this way.
  • Once dried, you can eat them as is or decorate them as you like. I like to mix a little cocoa powder with water and then flick it onto the eggs.
  • Place the eggs in individual muffin cups filled with Easter grass, or in an Easter basket if you like. Enjoy!
