  • Medium to a large pot
  • Air Fryer
  • Spatula
  • Cooking oil spray or use a basting brush

  • 5 to 6 petite potatoes Yukon gold, red, purple The size of a golf ball is a perfect size.
  • Cooking oil or butter only need a little bit
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Water for boiling

  • Rinse the petite potatoes first, unless they come pre-rinsed.
  • Add several small potatoes to a medium to a large pot with enough water to cover them by about an inch. Add about a tsp of salt to the water.
  • Set burner to medium-high and bring the water to a boil. Boil the potatoes for 15 to 20 minutes until fork tender but not much softer than that. You can also microwave them instead for a few minutes, bake them in the oven, or cook them whole in the air fryer instead of boiling them.
  • Remove them from the boiling water and smash them firmly with a potato masher, bottom of a glass, or bottom of a plate. It is okay if they break apart a little bit.
  • Spray with a bit of cooking oil or baste it on. You can also use butter.
  • Sprinkle on salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Then use a spatula to pick them up and place them in the air fryer basket.
  • Cook at 400F/205C for 5 to 6 minutes on that side. Then flip over and add a bit more oil and seasonings and cook an additional 5 to 6 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and serve!

NOTE: You can easily add more potatoes, just try not to crowd them too much in the air fryer.
NOTE: You can boil the potatoes, microwave them, bake them, or cook them whole in the air fryer to make them soft in the center, BEFORE smashing them and crisping them in the air fryer.
TIP: If you would like to add some cheese, let it cook for a few minutes on the second side, then pull out the basket and put some shredded cheese on top, then slide the basket back in and cook for another 4 minutes or so to melt the cheese.
NOTE: If you don't want to air fry them you can brown them in a skillet with a bit of oil using medium heat.
